KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is taking a more pragmatic and forward-looking approach to transport policies as it navigates rising global energy uncertainties, with a strong focus on protecting key economic sectors affected by diesel-related challenges.

Speaking at the Ministry of Transport’s monthly assembly, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that all policies must reflect current realities while preparing the country for future demands. He highlighted how the ongoing global energy crisis continues to exert pressure on costs and supply chains, requiring more adaptive and responsive policymaking.

“In formulating policies, we must consider the real challenges faced today as well as future needs, particularly in light of global energy uncertainties that are impacting costs and supply chains,” he said.

Addressing the diesel issue, Anwar underscored its significant impact on the majority of Malaysians, especially those in the transportation sector, as well as farmers, fishermen, smallholders, and tour bus operators. He noted that any policy response must be carefully calibrated to ensure fairness and sustainability.

“Our approach must be rooted in listening, understanding, and resolving issues in stages—comprehensively and fairly—to safeguard the livelihoods of the people,” he added.

During a separate meeting with the Ministry of Transport’s top leadership, the Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of several key strategic initiatives planned for the year. Among them are major rail projects such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), alongside broader transport infrastructure developments aimed at enhancing national connectivity and driving economic growth.

Discussions also covered efforts to strengthen the legal framework through amendments to relevant acts, expand the adoption of public transportation nationwide, and enhance human capital development within the transport sector. These initiatives are seen as critical to ensuring the industry remains competitive and sustainable in the long term.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient and inclusive transport ecosystem that supports economic continuity while addressing the needs of various sectors affected by ongoing global challenges.
