Malaysia, Russia to Expedite Implementation of Bilateral Agreements

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to expedite the implementation of bilateral agreements while continuing efforts to strengthen air connectivity between Malaysia and Russia.

He said the matter was discussed during a bilateral meeting with Putin shortly after his arrival in New Delhi, India, as part of efforts to further strengthen Malaysia-Russia relations.

Anwar said the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and provided both leaders with an opportunity to review the progress of bilateral ties and identify concrete measures to expand cooperation between the two countries.

“Among the matters raised was the need to accelerate efforts to establish direct flights between Malaysia and Russia, as well as implement the visa-free travel arrangements that had previously been agreed upon.

“Both initiatives are important in boosting tourism, trade and investment between Malaysia and Russia,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar said he also expressed appreciation for Russia’s support for energy cooperation with Malaysia.

“Both countries possess strengths and expertise that can be harnessed to expand cooperation in this strategic sector for mutual benefit,” he said.

During the meeting, Anwar said he and Putin also discussed efforts to increase the export of Malaysian palm oil to the Russian market.

“More importantly, every agreement reached must be swiftly translated into action.

“At the end of the meeting, I reiterated the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s invitation to President Putin to undertake a State Visit to Malaysia,” he said.

Anwar said the visit would open a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia relations, which continue to grow stronger, more mature and mutually beneficial.
