Malaysia Monitors Global Energy Crisis for Potential Impact on Food Prices

MELAKA: The Malaysian government is set to hold discussions with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) in the near future to assess the potential impact of the global energy crisis on food prices and essential goods.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the talks will determine whether adjustments, including subsidies or public assistance, are needed to help Malaysians cope with any price fluctuations.

“These discussions will also involve the National Economic Action Council. Any changes, including subsidies or aid for the community, will be announced from time to time,” he said.

Speaking after officiating the Program Sentuhan MADANI with Melaka state farming leaders at Dewan Datuk Demang Hussin in Bukit Katil, the minister reassured them that Malaysia’s food supply remains sufficient and there is no immediate shortage.

According to Datuk Seri Mohamad, Malaysia currently has enough food stocks to last the next seven to eight months. However, he warned that price adjustments may occur if new supplies need to be released at higher costs due to rising agricultural input prices.

He emphasized that the government is managing the situation within a crisis preparedness framework, maintaining continuous monitoring to ensure stability in food supply and prices.

Also present at the event was Deputy Minister of Higher Education Adam Adli Abdul Halim, who is also the Member of Parliament for Hang Tuah Jaya.

This proactive approach underscores Malaysia’s commitment to safeguarding food security while remaining vigilant amid global economic pressures
