SHAH ALAM: Popular local music group KRU is set to expand their legacy into the food and beverage (F&B) business through the opening of KRU Café at Aneka Walk here in the third quarter of this year.
The music and entertainment-themed café is being developed through a collaboration between KRU, Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., Babah Ventures Sdn. Bhd. (BBV), and TMG Ventures Sdn. Bhd. (TMGV).
The opening of KRU Café follows the success of KRU’s concert series in Malaysia and Singapore, as well as the resurgence of the group’s songs on digital streaming platforms.
KRU, comprising three brothers, Datuk Norman Abdul Halim, Yusry Abdul Halim, and Edry Abdul Halim, view this development as an opportunity to provide a new platform to continue their connection with fans beyond the concert stage.
KRU Café will feature a restaurant concept themed around the group’s musical journey, combining nostalgic elements, entertainment, musical performances, and interactive experiences for fans.
At the same time, the café is expected to serve as a platform to discover and showcase new talent through musical performances, creative collaborations, and various community activities.
Sony Music Malaysia Managing Director, Kenny Ong, said that the project presents an opportunity to expand KRU’s connection with fans through a more comprehensive lifestyle experience.
“The most exciting thing is the opportunity to extend KRU’s connection with fans beyond music to a more immersive lifestyle experience.
“KRU Café is about bringing their legacy to life in a fresh and exciting way, allowing fans to connect with KRU’s music, memories, and spirit in a new setting,” he said.
Under the collaboration, TMGV will be responsible for developing and curating the entire food and beverage offering at KRU Café.
The hospitality group, which also developed The Majapahit restaurant brand, will provide a menu based on a fusion of Southeast Asian flavours and popular Western dishes, including premium grilled items and steaks.
Meanwhile, BBV will act as a strategic partner for operations and business expansion aspects of KRU Café.
The company, co-founded by comedian and radio host Ajak Shiro, is the operator of the Bumbu Babah restaurant brand, which currently has nearly 60 outlets nationwide.
Norman said that BBV’s achievement in expanding Bumbu Babah in less than two years gives confidence in KRU Café’s potential to be expanded to other locations in the future.
“We are confident that if the first outlet receives the expected response, KRU Café has great potential to expand throughout Malaysia,” he said.
Edry said that the opening of the café is another effort by KRU to continue appreciating the support of fans who have been with them throughout the decades.
“KRU Café is another way for us to continue connecting with fans while creating more meaningful experiences together,” he said.
According to Yusry, KRU Café is also hoped to play a role as a platform for developing new talent in the creative industry.
“More than just a dining place, we envision this café as a space that brings to life musical performances, creative collaborations, and various community activities,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ajak said that his team did not take long to agree to join the project after receiving a presentation from Sony Music Malaysia.
“It is a great honour for us to collaborate with KRU. They are national legends and among the most influential music artists ever produced by Malaysia.
“We are excited to combine their legacy with our experience in developing and operating restaurant brands,” he said.
The first KRU Café outlet will operate at Aneka Walk, Shah Alam, a lifestyle development and community space developed by PKNS as a destination for food, culture, entertainment, and community activities.
The café is expected to offer a combination of dining, music, live performances, nostalgic elements, and interactive activities for visitors.
