KAJANG, Feb 10: A 52-year-old businessman was fined RM5,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday after admitting to assaulting and threatening to kill a senior citizen following a road accident in Cheras.

Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil imposed the fine on Saiful Adli Yusof and ordered him to serve eight months in jail if he fails to pay. He was charged with voluntarily causing injury and criminal intimidation under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on Feb 8 along Jalan Cheras–Hulu Langat, where the victim, 70-year-old Liew Khoon Foo, was involved in a traffic accident with a luxury van driven by the accused. Fearing further confrontation, the elderly man continued driving, but Saiful followed him to Taman Suntex.

At a traffic light, the accused reportedly kicked the victim’s car, triggering its alarm. When Liew stepped out of the vehicle, he was punched and kicked multiple times, suffering facial injuries, a bruised eye, a swollen chin, and a bleeding tongue. The accused also allegedly issued death threats during the altercation.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aida Afiqah Shaari urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a warning to the public, while defense counsel Muhammad Syakir Haznal appealed for leniency, citing his client’s financial hardship and family responsibilities.

The defense said Saiful earns about RM2,000 a month and is the sole breadwinner for his wife, four children, and an ailing mother-in-law. The lawyer also told the court that the accused had been emotionally shaken during the incident as he was traveling with his wife and newborn baby.

The case drew public attention after a one-minute video of the assault went viral on social media, showing the accused shouting at and kicking the victim while bystanders attempted to intervene.
