Indonesia Islamic School Collapse Kills Student, Injures Dozens; Rescue Efforts Ongoing

SIDOARJO, Indonesia, Sept 30:A building under construction at an Islamic boarding school in East Java collapsed during afternoon prayers on Monday, killing at least one student, injuring more than 80 others, and leaving several feared trapped under the rubble, authorities said.

The tragedy struck at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo when a four-story prayer hall, expanded without proper authorization, gave way as dozens of students were inside. The collapse buried worshippers beneath steel and concrete, sparking a frantic overnight rescue operation.

Police confirmed that the building was originally two stories high but had been renovated with two additional floors without permits. “The foundation was not strong enough to support the extra weight, causing the structure to give way during construction work,” said provincial police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast.

Officials reported one male student dead and 83 others injured, with several in critical condition. Most victims were male, as female students had been praying in a separate hall and escaped unscathed. Survivors described scenes of chaos, with teachers, residents, and classmates pulling out the wounded, many with head injuries and broken bones.

Rescue chief Nanang Sigit said at least three students were still believed to be alive under the rubble. “We have managed to run oxygen and water lines to them. The priority is saving those who are trapped,” he said, noting that several other bodies were also visible beneath the debris.

Television footage showed soldiers, police, and emergency crews working through the night with heavy equipment, while anxious families gathered nearby, waiting for news.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the collapse.
