Djibouti Urges Action on Gaza, Sudan, and Calls for UN Reform

NEW YORK, Sept 30: Djibouti has called for urgent international action to address escalating humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan, while pressing for sweeping reforms of the United Nations and its Security Council.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Monday, Djibouti’s ambassador Mohamed Siad Doualeh described the situation in Gaza as “unspeakable horror,” accusing Israel of killing children “daily with impunity” and using famine as a weapon of war.

He reaffirmed Djibouti’s solidarity with Palestine, warning that while the world discusses reviving a two-state solution, Israel is working to “bury” any chance of a viable sovereign Palestinian state. “The two-state solution remains the only path to meet Palestinian aspirations and secure lasting peace,” Doualeh stressed.

Turning to Sudan, the envoy denounced the conflict as a “fratricidal war” responsible for mass civilian deaths, destruction, and displacement. He urged an immediate ceasefire and coordinated international intervention.

Doualeh also raised concerns over rising geopolitical instability across the Middle East and Africa, condemning Israeli aggression against Qatar and warning of broader regional fragmentation from the Sahel to Sudan.

On global governance, he said the UN’s credibility is being undermined by the Security Council’s “systematic use of the veto,” which has left the body paralyzed. He called for stronger African representation, renewed commitment to multilateralism, and reforms that would allow all nations to play a meaningful role in international decision-making.

“The UN remains more essential than ever,” Doualeh concluded. “We must restore multilateralism’s purpose and strengthen cooperation in the interest of all states.”
