KUALA LUMPUR: The MADANI Government today decided to enhance electricity bill subsidies by expanding the protection threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh per month.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the measure will take effect for electricity consumption from September until Dec 31, 2026.

He said the move was taken as an immediate measure to address the current cost-of-living pressures faced by the people.

“Under this measure, domestic consumers who use up to 800 kWh of electricity per month will be given protection through exemptions from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), Retail Charge and Sales and Service Tax (SST),” he said in a statement on Facebook this afternoon.

Earlier, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting on electricity costs at his office with representatives from the Energy Commission (ST), Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also PETRA Minister, and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

“Special appreciation goes to TNB, PETRA and the Energy Commission for their roles in enabling this measure to be implemented promptly,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the recent haze and hotter weather had led to increased electricity consumption among some households, causing their monthly usage to exceed the 600 kWh threshold and resulting in unusually high electricity bills.

“Therefore, the MADANI Government will continue to closely monitor developments in fuel costs and current energy market conditions to ensure that any decisions related to electricity tariffs strike a balance between affordability and the people’s cost-of-living burden, security of electricity supply and the sustainability of the country’s energy sector,” he said.
