ISTANBUL: Several explosions were heard in Iran on Wednesday night, shortly after United States (US) President Donald Trump threatened to launch another series of attacks on the country, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported, citing local media.

Mehr News Agency reported that eight explosions occurred in Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.

Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported that approximately 10 explosions were also heard in Chabahar and Konarak in southeastern Iran, in addition to power outages in several areas of Chabahar.

According to Mehr News Agency, explosions were also heard in several areas of Bushehr province in southwestern Iran.

Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, reported that explosions also occurred in the village of Tahrouyi near Sirik, on Abu Musa Island near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the port city of Jask in the southeast of the country.

Mehr reported that Iran’s air defence system intercepted “enemy targets” around Bandar Abbas.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that US forces have launched another series of attacks on Iran, aimed at weakening Tehran’s capability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump had earlier said that Washington “may” launch another attack on Iran on Wednesday night, following the US overnight strikes in response to attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
