Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire Between Ukraine and Russia

WASHINGTON: United States (US) President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire covering the energy sector between Ukraine and Russia.

In a social media post, Trump claimed that both countries had reached an agreement on the matter.

“Effective immediately, an energy ceasefire is in place in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

However, Trump did not provide further details about the agreement.

The announcement was reportedly made without consulting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who described the agreement to halt long-range attacks as news to him.

Zelensky said he was surprised by the announcement but was prepared to accept the agreement if Russian President Vladimir Putin also agreed to implement it.

“If Trump negotiated this with Putin, please let us know when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and will accept it,” Zelensky told news website Axios.

Earlier, Zelensky rejected Trump’s demand on Saturday for Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries.

Zelensky said Moscow must first halt its brutal attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
