CAIRO, Oct 9: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has told US President Donald Trump that he “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize” for his role in securing a historic ceasefire agreement in Gaza, according to a statement released by the Egyptian presidency on Thursday.
In a phone call between the two leaders, El-Sisi praised Trump’s efforts in mediating the US-brokered peace plan that ended months of intense fighting between Israel and Hamas. “President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to achieving peace and stability in the region,” El-Sisi reportedly said.
During the call, El-Sisi also invited Trump to attend a celebration in Egypt marking the official conclusion of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, the first phase of which was signed during Egyptian-led negotiations in Cairo earlier this week.
El-Sisi’s office added that the Egyptian president “stressed the importance of moving forward with the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in all its stages,” noting that Egypt remains committed to overseeing the next phases of the peace roadmap.
The ceasefire deal, mediated by Egypt and the United States, includes provisions for a complete cessation of hostilities and a mutual exchange of detainees. Hamas is expected to release several Israeli hostages, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Analysts say El-Sisi’s remarks reflect Egypt’s desire to position itself as a key peace broker in the Middle East, while Trump’s potential visit to Cairo next week could mark a significant diplomatic moment in US-Arab relations.
