Bus Plunges into Ravine, Killing 31 in Ethiopia
ADDIS ABABA – At least 31 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a bus carrying passengers beyond its capacity veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia in the early hours of Monday.
According to the Kombolcha City Administration Police Division, the bus was traveling from the Dessie area toward the capital, Addis Ababa, before it lost control and went off a winding road through a hilly area.
Authorities reported that many of the victims died due to delays in rescue operations caused by a lack of basic infrastructure and ambulance services in the area.
Injured victims had to be transported to the hospital using public vehicles.
The road at the incident location is well known as a dangerous route due to the hilly terrain and sharp bends.
As of now, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by authorities.
The incident adds to the list of serious road accidents in Ethiopia.
In December 2024, a bus crash that plunged into a river in the Sidama region of southern Ethiopia claimed 66 lives.
Ethiopian authorities are now conducting further investigations to identify the cause of the incident as well as measures to be taken to improve road safety in the country.
