Bangkok Placed Under Orange Alert as PM2.5 Pollution Exceeds Safe Levels

Bangkok: Air pollution once again blanketed Bangkok on Friday morning as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels rose above the national safety standard, prompting authorities to issue a citywide orange-level air quality alert.

According to the Bangkok Air Quality Information Centre, PM2.5 readings across the capital averaged 48.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 7am, surpassing the acceptable limit of 37.5 µg/m³. The air quality was classified as “starting to affect health,” indicating potential health risks, particularly for sensitive groups.

The Pathum Wan district recorded the highest pollution level, with PM2.5 concentrations reaching 72.8 µg/m³, significantly above safe thresholds. Several other areas across the city also reported elevated readings.

City officials said that while PM2.5 levels were expected to gradually ease, overall air quality remained a concern. The orange-level alert signals conditions that may begin to impact public health if exposure continues.

Authorities advised residents to take precautionary measures, including wearing PM2.5-rated face masks when outdoors and reducing prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions were urged to be especially cautious.

Bangkok has faced recurring air pollution episodes in recent years, particularly during the dry season, driven by traffic emissions, industrial activity, and weather conditions that trap pollutants over the city.

Officials said air quality would continue to be closely monitored, with updates to be provided as conditions evolve.
