PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki officially clocked out of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters for the final time on Tuesday, marking the end of his tenure as chief commissioner after six years in office.

In a farewell speech during a special ceremony at MACC headquarters, Azam called on all officers and staff to fully support and cooperate with the incoming leadership to ensure the organisation remains strong and effective.

“Loyalty and cooperation with the incoming leadership are crucial for the stability of the organisation,” he said. “If officers do not cooperate with the new leadership, they are sabotaging the organisation itself.”

He emphasised that MACC personnel must remain committed to serving the nation regardless of changes in leadership.

“We remain here as officers who serve the rakyat and the country,” he added.

Azam also stressed the importance of continuing the legacy of previous leadership, saying the MACC must remain relevant in line with its founding vision.

“This organisation must remain relevant as envisioned by earlier leadership. I am only continuing the legacy left behind for the sake of the country and the people,” he said.

Reflecting on his long career spanning over four decades in public service, Azam expressed gratitude to MACC officers and the organising committee for a heartfelt farewell ceremony.

“I am very touched and deeply moved by the support shown by my officers in accompanying me on my retirement at the age of 63,” he said.

Azam, who began his career with the former Anti-Corruption Agency (BPR) before serving in the MACC, described his journey as one filled with challenges and valuable experience.

He said he intends to continue contributing to society based on his experience in governance and integrity work, as long as he has the ability to do so.

During his speech, Azam became emotional while thanking his family for their unwavering support throughout his career.

“My family is my strongest supporter. They had to face challenges and hardship they should never have had to endure,” he said, visibly in tears.

He also expressed appreciation that his family remained calm and supportive during difficult periods.

Azam added that the achievements of the MACC under his leadership were the result of collective effort rather than individual success.

He highlighted the strong spirit of unity and teamwork within the commission as a key factor in its ability to face evolving corruption challenges.

Before concluding his tenure, Azam apologised for any shortcomings during his time in office.

“I seek forgiveness and apologise for any shortcomings in administering and managing this organisation. Truly, all weaknesses came from me,” he said.
