KUALA LUMPUR: Three family members, including a 12‑year‑old girl, were killed after an Immigration Department lorry is believed to have run a red light before crashing into a car and hitting pedestrians at the Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection, early this morning.
The victims were a 53‑year‑old man and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12, who died at the scene after the accident at around 1 am at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection.
The victim’s 55‑year‑old wife, who is also the mother of the two daughters, sustained injuries to her head, right hand and both legs.
The victim was then rushed to the red zone of Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for treatment.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the accident involved an empty Isuzu lorry belonging to the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Immigration Department, a Proton Saga, an Inokom Matrix and four pedestrians.
Immigration lorry heading to Chow Kit
Preliminary investigations found that the Immigration lorry was driven by a 43‑year‑old man who was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office heading towards Chow Kit.
“The suspect was on his way there to pick up detainees following an operation against undocumented immigrants in that area.
“The lorry is believed to have entered the intersection when the traffic light for its lane was red, with the beacon light and siren activated,” he said in a statement today.
At the same time, the Proton Saga driven by a 50‑year‑old man was moving straight through the intersection after the traffic light for his lane turned green.
Mohd Zamzuri said the Saga driver is believed to have been unable to avoid the Immigration lorry before the collision occurred in the middle of the intersection.
“The impact of the collision caused the Immigration lorry to lose control and skid before hitting four pedestrians, all of whom were from the same family.
“The lorry also hit an Inokom Matrix driven by a 38‑year‑old man and stopped at the traffic light intersection,” he said.
He said all three drivers involved were not injured.
“Police then arrested the 43‑year‑old Immigration lorry driver and the 50‑year‑old Proton Saga driver to assist investigations.
“Breathalyser tests for alcohol and initial urine screenings conducted on both drivers showed negative results,” he said.
Police obtain CCTV footage, independent witnesses
Mohd Zamzuri said, police have conducted inspections at the scene, obtained closed‑circuit television (CCTV) footage and are tracking independent witnesses.
“The vehicles involved have also been taken for further inspection and investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving,” he said.
Members of the public with information regarding the incident are urged to contact the Tun H S Lee Road Traffic Police Station at 03‑2071 9999 or any nearby police station.
Several videos and pictures of the mangled vehicles in the accident have also gone viral on social media.
