PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim insisted that the Bumiputera quota will continue to be maintained even though the government announced a decision to guarantee a place in Matriculation to outstanding candidates for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) regardless of race or background at matriculation.

Berita Harian reports, the Prime Minister said, since the announcement was made, the decision involved has become a topic of discussion and polemic and has heated up the political temperature.

“We take the path that we consider to be fair and reasonable, if he (the student) is our citizen, we must protect him but we also accept the statement about meritocracy, so regardless of race and region, we can guarantee a place in matriculation.

“Our Bumiputera quota will still be maintained because this decision has been made for a long time because it is related to the Constitution, guaranteeing the future of Bumiputera Malays so that there is no gap, so civil servants must understand that we uphold meritocracy, but we also uphold justice,” he said.

He said this while delivering a message at the Monthly Assembly with Members of the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) here, today.
