KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (VoM): ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) President and Speaker of Malaysia’s House of Representatives, Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari Abdul, delivered the opening address at the 2nd WAIPA Women Political Leaders Forum, calling for greater empowerment of women and youth in driving future-ready governance across the region.

The forum, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, was attended by parliamentarians, dignitaries, and representatives from ASEAN member states.

In his remarks, Johari highlighted that the future of ASEAN governance depends on how boldly women and youth are empowered to lead amid major global transitions.

“Women’s leadership is not merely a question of equality, but a necessity for effective, resilient, and forward-looking governance,” Johari said, noting that women bring collaboration, foresight, and inclusivity to the decision-making process.

Themed “Women’s Leadership for Future-Ready Governance: Navigating Transitions in the Digital and Sustainability Era,” the forum underscored two defining challenges: digital transformation and sustainability. Johari stressed that women must be fully included in shaping digital policies while also playing an active role in addressing climate change and safeguarding natural resources.

Johari also placed strong emphasis on nurturing the next generation of leaders through initiatives such as Youth Parliament. He described it as an “invaluable training ground” that equips young people with democratic values, leadership skills, and the confidence to contribute to public life.

“For young women especially, Youth Parliament provides a pathway to break barriers, build confidence, and envision themselves as future parliamentarians and leaders,” he said.

Calling for stronger support from AIPA member parliaments, Johari urged governments and societies to provide opportunities, mentorship, and meaningful participation for youth in decision-making processes.

He praised WAIPA for convening the forum, describing it as a reflection of ASEAN’s spirit of cooperation and inclusivity.

The President of AIPA concluded by reaffirming the commitment to championing women’s leadership in ASEAN:

“By nurturing women leaders, we can ensure that ASEAN’s tomorrow will be shaped by those who are inclusive in vision, innovative in spirit, and courageous in action.”

Johari then officially declared the 2nd WAIPA Women Political Leaders Forum open.
