OREGON: A teacher bravely attempted to stop an armed attacker before the suspect was shot dead by the father of two students in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, that claimed four lives.

According to local authorities, the incident at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday claimed the lives of a teacher and three children aged five, eight and 11.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teacher initially threw a mobile phone at the suspect before struggling with him in an attempt to disarm him of the shotgun used in the attack.

“The teacher’s actions were extremely brave and heroic,” he said at a press conference.

Krantz said the suspect was subsequently shot several times by a student’s father who entered the classroom carrying a .40-calibre handgun.

The father was identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco, a Bend resident whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary School.

According to CBS News, the suspect was identified as 16-year-old Griffin John.

Authorities said the teenager died at the scene after being shot by Giamanco.

The incident shocked the local community and reignited debate over gun violence and school safety in the United States.

Investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing.
