KPDN Investigates Claims of Water-Contaminated Petrol in Tanjung Mas
KOTA BHARU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) is investigating allegations of water-contaminated petrol believed to have caused damage to several vehicles after refuelling at a petrol station in Tanjung Mas here.
Kelantan KPDN Director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf urged affected motorists to lodge official complaints with the ministry, along with relevant evidence, to facilitate further investigations.
He said consumers who suffered losses could also seek compensation through the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TTPM).
“Consumers must lodge official complaints and provide all evidence of damage believed to be linked to refuelling with petrol suspected of being contaminated with water.
“If the tribunal determines that an offence has occurred, the petrol station owner may be ordered to pay compensation,” he said at a press conference at the Kelantan KPDN office on Friday.
On Thursday, Sinar Harian reported that a businessman claimed to have suffered losses of RM4,800 after his Honda Stream was damaged, allegedly due to refuelling with RON95 petrol contaminated with water at a petrol station in Tanjung Mas last month.
In a related development, Hanif Yusabra said the ministry had also collected petrol samples from a petrol station in Tanah Merah following a complaint from a motorist who claimed that his vehicle was damaged after refuelling at the premises last week.
“The samples have been sent to the Chemistry Department to determine whether the petrol was indeed contaminated with water.
“We are still awaiting the analysis results before taking any further action against the petrol station involved,” he said.
He also encouraged members of the public who experienced similar incidents to lodge official complaints with KPDN to facilitate investigations.
According to him, consumers may also file claims through the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia, which allows claims of up to RM50,000.
