Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand Agree to Immediate Ceasefire in High-Level Meeting Chaired by PM Anwar Ibrahim

PUTRAJAYA: The governments of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have reached a landmark agreement for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, following a special meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya. The meeting was attended by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and co-organized by the United States with active participation from the People’s Republic of China.

The discussions were aimed at promoting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation between Cambodia and Thailand, signaling a united regional and international commitment to stability and dialogue.

  1. Immediate Ceasefire—Both sides agreed to an unconditional ceasefire, effective from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28, 2025, marking the first critical step toward de-escalation and restoring peace.

  2. Military Coordination Meeting—An informal meeting between regional military commanders from both sides will take place at 07:00 hours on July 29, 2025, followed by a session with defense attachés under ASEAN’s chairmanship, subject to mutual agreement.

  3. General Border Committee Meeting—The next formal GBC meeting is scheduled for August 4, 2025, and will be hosted by Cambodia.

Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, will coordinate an observer team to verify the implementation of the ceasefire, in consultation with other ASEAN member states. This reflects a strong regional commitment to ensuring peace on the ground.

Additionally, Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to restore direct communications between their prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defense ministers. The Foreign and Defense Ministers of the three countries have been tasked with developing a detailed mechanism for implementation, verification, and reporting, ensuring accountability and sustainability of the ceasefire.

The United States played an active role, with President Donald J. Trump personally engaging both leaders to urge a peaceful resolution. China also maintained close communication with all parties, reinforcing dialogue and efforts to restore peace.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to upholding international law, peaceful coexistence, and multilateral cooperation, paving the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
