PUTRAJAYA, July 21 (VOM-Voice of Malaysia): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a firm warning to foreign powers, including the United States, stating that Malaysia will not tolerate external interference in its domestic affairs or national policies.

Speaking at a gathering of staff from the Prime Minister’s Department at Dewan Da’ Seri Endon, Puspanitapuri, Anwar emphasized that no foreign country will be allowed to impose terms that threaten Malaysia’s sovereignty or core policy frameworks.

“Malaysia maintains clear red lines in international negotiations — our national policies must not be interfered with,” Anwar declared. “If anyone attempts to undermine policies such as Bumiputera privileges or local company prioritisation, we will firmly say no.”

Anwar also highlighted Malaysia’s record-breaking investment achievements, revealing that approved investments by the end of 2024 reached between RM3.7 billion and RM8 billion—the highest in the nation’s history. These include major commitments from the electrical and electronics sectors, as well as a notable USD 10 billion investment by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“These figures reflect strong investor confidence and growing international recognition of Malaysia’s economic direction,” said Anwar.

Malaysia is currently engaged in complex trade negotiations with the United States, particularly over tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Anwar stressed that while Malaysia welcomes trade and investment, the nation would not compromise on its sovereignty.

“These talks are not only handled by the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry but are also discussed at the Cabinet level,” he said. “Our stand is now firmer and more meticulous.”

He affirmed Malaysia’s right to uphold its procurement policies, which prioritize local companies, calling it a “non-negotiable position.”

Despite the tough stance, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining friendly and open trade relations with all countries, including the United States.

“The U.S. remains the largest investor in Malaysia across various sectors,” he acknowledged, while also highlighting strong ties with China and active engagement within ASEAN.

Anwar also noted that his personal relationships with world leaders continue to yield results for Malaysian businesses.

“President Lula of Brazil personally called me and said, ‘Anwar, I want to encourage you. Please get Petronas to come here. We’ve reserved one well for Petronas,’” he shared.

The Prime Minister countered critics by citing robust data on investment implementation. From 2021 to June 2025, 3,494 manufacturing projects were approved, with 3,095 already operational—representing an 86.4% implementation rate. The figure stood at 90.6% in 2023 and 79.2% in 2024.

In the first quarter of 2025, the rate was 49.8%, mainly due to the early stages of new projects.

Malaysia’s rise from 34th to 23rd in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking—the highest jump by any country—was also cited as evidence of the government’s strong performance.

“This leap is driven by economic resilience and government efficiency,” said Anwar, urging civil servants to remain focused and ignore baseless criticism.

Prime Minister Anwar reaffirmed that while Malaysia welcomes friendly trade relations, it will never compromise on its national interests or sovereignty.
