Another Earthquake Strikes Flores

JAKARTA: Another earthquake measuring 5.2 magnitude struck off the coast of Flores Island, Indonesia on Wednesday, with tremors felt in several areas in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed that the earthquake occurred at 10.13 am local time at a depth of 10 kilometres (km), with the epicentre located in the Flores Sea, approximately 54 km northwest of Ende.

According to data on the BMKG website, tremors were felt in Ende and the neighbouring district of Nagekeo.

BMKG informed that the event did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, but advised residents to be vigilant for possible aftershocks.

Flores continues to experience seismic activity following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck last Saturday, causing deaths, injuries and widespread damage in East Nusa Tenggara.

As of 5 am Tuesday, BMKG recorded 2,119 aftershocks with magnitudes between 1.3 and 6.2, including 24 tremors exceeding 5.0 magnitude.

The death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake has risen to 70 as of Tuesday, while 11,925 houses were reported damaged.
