KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJ) has expressed concern over the Federal Court’s decision to reject the application for permission by Clare Rewcastle-Brown, Gerak Budaya Enterprise, and Vinlin Press in the defamation case.

The Secretary-General of the National Union of Journalists Malaysia, Teh Athira, stated that the decision raises important questions regarding the protection of media freedom and journalists’ ability to report on public interest issues without facing excessive legal risks.

“While we respect the individual’s right to seek justice, NUJ believes that this decision may hinder reporting on significant public interest investigations, such as the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

“Rewcastle-Brown’s critical role in exposing corruption should not be overshadowed by a narrow focus on the defamation case,” she said in a statement.

Teh further noted that the court’s reliance on complex linguistic analysis in this case highlights the difficulties faced by journalists in navigating defamation laws.

She said such legal obstacles risk impeding the vital efforts of the media to hold power accountable.

“We urge the authorities to ensure that Malaysia remains a safe environment for journalists to operate freely, without fear of undue legal consequences.

“NUJ reaffirms its commitment to defending media freedom and the public’s right to information,” she said.
