KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin passed away last night in the United Kingdom (UK) at the age of 74.

His death was confirmed by his brother, Raja Idris, this morning, according to the FMT portal.

“With deep sadness, I inform you that my beloved younger brother, Raja Petra Kamarudin, has just passed away at 11:26 PM UK time on Monday (September 9) in Manchester, UK,” he said in a brief text to FMT.

Raja Petra, better known as RPK, was born on September 27, 1950.

He managed the website Malaysia Today, which published commentary and articles on Malaysian politics.

Raja Petra, who had lived in Manchester, UK for several years, remained active in writing and expressing his views on Malaysian politics through digital platforms.

Born on September 27, 1950, he was a member of the Selangor royal family and also the nephew of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.

The late Raja Petra received his early education at Alice Smith School and later continued his studies at Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) before completing his education at Victoria Institution.

He married Marina Lee Abdullah on April 14, 1973, and had five children and two grandchildren.

Raja Petra was previously detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in 2001 and 2008.
