SKMM asked to cooperate with police in investigation of bus driver recording students
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) to assist the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in investigating a school bus driver who uploaded videos of students on social media.
According to the Wilayahku portal, Fahmi stated that SKMM, as a technical agency, has also reached out to TikTok to preserve data to ensure that the police have immediate access to all necessary information.
“The content produced by the bus driver has raised concerning comments upon review,” Fahmi said during a press conference.
He made these remarks at the International Legal Conference on Online Threats 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Fahmi further emphasized the need for social media platforms to offer greater cooperation with authorities. “I believe the public also supports us in ensuring that children under 13 do not have social media accounts,” he added.
Fahmi also noted that SKMM will collaborate with the D11 Division (Sexual, Women, and Child Investigation) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department to help identify other individuals who may be involved in or suspected of committing legal violations in the country.
Today, the police arrested a 24-year-old bus driver who had uploaded videos and posted images of children in his bus in Simpang Renggam, Kluang. The police also seized the driver’s mobile phone, which is believed to have been used for further investigation.
Yesterday, Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri instructed her officers to file a police report concerning the actions of the school bus driver. Nancy said she had directed officials from the Department of Child Development to file the report and that her ministry is ready to cooperate with the Sexual, Women, and Child Investigation Division of the Johor police headquarters.
In a video posted by the bus driver, who has over 640,000 followers on TikTok, the man referred to a female student as his ‘crush’ or girlfriend. The driver frequently recorded videos while driving, clearly showing the students’ faces in the vehicle. The videos have accumulated 10.5 million likes so far.
