Restoration of landslide incident site expected to take 3 to 6 months, says Kuala Lumpur Mayor

KUALA LUMPUR: The process of restoring and rebuilding the area around the landslide incident on Jalan Masjid India is expected to take between three to six months, said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

According to Bernama, she stated that the restoration and reconstruction work will involve a stretch of approximately 200 meters from Wisma Yakin to the Police Station on Jalan Masjid India.

The area, she noted, is currently closed off with barriers to facilitate repair work and detailed studies related to the underground utility systems, as well as other related matters by the relevant agencies.

“Examining the underground utility systems requires time and will involve agencies such as Indah Water Konsortium and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) to inspect for possible pipe leaks.

“Additionally, we will also collaborate with telecommunications companies to check for cables, as there are company cables in the wall area (underground). The Department of Minerals and Geoscience will provide detailed information on technical reports and soil stability (around the incident site),” she told Bernama.

Maimunah added that a special committee formed on August 25 is scheduled to hold discussions tomorrow regarding further actions that need to be taken.

She mentioned that traders in the vicinity of the incident site can continue their business as usual; however, the public is advised not to cross the yellow tape set up by the police and to use only the designated pedestrian pathways during the restoration process.

Yesterday, Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), was reported to have said that the search and rescue operation for G. Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, has been halted and shifted to the ‘search and recovery’ phase after nine days of searching for the victim.
