KUALA LUMPUR: The donning of the necklace by Kuala Lumpur’s Mayor, Datuk Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah Mohd Sharif, yesterday symbolized and marked the tradition of accepting her new role.

According to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the necklace presented to the Mayor is the same one received by DBKL in 1972. It weighs 624 grams and is adorned with 13 diamonds.

“This necklace was worn for the first time by the Second Mayor of Kuala Lumpur,” DBKL stated on Facebook.

This announcement came after the 15th Mayor’s Necklace Ceremony held yesterday at Menara DBKL 1.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa.

Yesterday, Zaliha draped the necklace over Maimunah as the 15th Mayor of Kuala Lumpur.

In addition, DBKL reported that Maimunah also received a ceremonial kris from Zaliha, symbolizing the trust and responsibilities that the chief administrator will undertake in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Maimunah began her duties as the 15th Mayor on August 15, succeeding Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh, the 14th Mayor of Kuala Lumpur.

Also present at the ceremony was the Director-General of the Federal Territories Department, Datuk Indera Noridah Abdul Halim.
