Najib Yet to Pay RM50 Million Fine, No Specific Payment Deadline – Attorney General
KOTA BHARU: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to pay the RM50 million fine, according to the latest information received by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said no specific deadline has been set for payment of the fine.
“Based on the information we have received so far, Datuk Seri Najib has yet to fulfil the requirement. That is the situation at present,” he told reporters after attending the launch of the Attorney General’s Chambers MADANI Adopted School Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Hor here today.
Asked whether Najib would still be required to serve his prison sentence as long as the fine remained unpaid, Mohd Dusuki confirmed that this was the case.
On September 18, the media reported that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, had granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.
The order is conditional upon Najib paying the RM50 million fine.
The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the order was decided at the 64th Pardons Board Meeting for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.
In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The conviction and sentence were subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.
However, at its 61st meeting on January 29, 2024, the Pardons Board decided to reduce the former Pekan Member of Parliament’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Meanwhile, on December 26 last year, the High Court sentenced the former prime minister to 15 years in prison and imposed a RM11.4 billion fine after finding him guilty of four charges of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds.
He filed an appeal on December 29, 2025.
In a separate civil case, the High Court on March 31 ordered Najib to repay USD1.3 billion to SRC International after finding that he had breached his fiduciary duties, abused his position and misappropriated company funds for personal gain.
However, enforcement of the payment order has been stayed pending the outcome of his appeal.
Najib also faces two other lawsuits, involving SRC International and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, filed in 2021, as well as a USD5.64 billion civil suit brought by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries. These cases are still undergoing court proceedings.
