UMNO Youth Urges All Parties Not to Politicise Pardoning Powers

PETALING JAYA: All parties should respect the legal process and refrain from politicising the pardoning powers provided for under the Federal Constitution.

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Salleh said the movement would continue to adhere to legal and constitutional channels in addressing the matter.

He said UMNO Youth acknowledged and respected the decision of the 63rd Pardons Board Meeting for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

“UMNO Youth respects the decision to defer consideration of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application for a pardon to a future meeting of the Pardons Board,” he said in a statement today.

Akmal said the power to grant pardons is vested in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution.

As such, he said the process must be fully respected without any pressure, demands or political interference from any party.

“UMNO Youth will continue to adhere to legal and constitutional channels. We urge all parties to respect this process and not politicise the pardoning powers provided for under the Federal Constitution,” he said.
