Selangor Completes Double Triumph

SELANGOR completed a remarkable double at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) after the Red and Yellow contingent was also crowned overall champion of the Selangor 2026 Para SUKMA, which concluded on Thursday.

The host state amassed 200 medals — 93 gold, 55 silver and 52 bronze — comfortably surpassing its pre-Games target of 60 gold medals.

Sabah finished second with 69 gold, 51 silver and 45 bronze medals, while Sarawak took third place with 52 gold, 32 silver and 54 bronze.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the achievement went beyond success in competition, describing the Games as an important platform for shaping the future of para sports in the country.

He expressed hope that athletes who excelled at the Games would progress to greater heights, including the Paralympic stage, and eventually become world champions.

“That was indeed Selangor’s aspiration in hosting the Games and limiting the age category to those under 40, so that the country’s para sports ecosystem remains dynamic and continues to produce more new talent and a stronger generation of competitive athletes capable of bringing glory to Malaysia on the international stage.

“Even if these athletes are not from Selangor, the state will still be proud because these talents emerged from the Selangor 2026 Para SUKMA,” he said.

The closing ceremony was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

In August, Selangor emerged overall champion of SUKMA 2026 after winning 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals.

Amirudin said the participation of 1,352 para athletes from across the country in 10 sports was highly significant for Selangor and demonstrated the Games’ potential as a platform for discovering new talent.

He said that despite organising the Games prudently and cost-effectively, the state government remained committed to ensuring that the event left lasting memories for all participating athletes.

“Tonight (Thursday), the Para SUKMA competition in Selangor comes to an end. The Games torch and flag will be handed over to Kelantan Darul Naim, host of the 23rd SUKMA in 2028.

“In two years’ time, I believe the competition in Kelantan will be even more intense. May our exceptional athletes continue to achieve greater success and make their parents, families, communities, states and country proud,” he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor para swimmer Muhammad Safwan Suhaimi, 20, was named Best Male Para Athlete of the Selangor 2026 Para SUKMA.

Sarawak para athletics athlete Noshazwani Maisara Marzuki, 22, was named Best Female Para Athlete.

Both athletes received RM5,000 in cash and a trophy.
