Wany Hasrita Wears Gloves As Precaution To Maintain Boundaries While Showing Respect Through Handshakes
KUALA LUMPUR: Always ready to put on gloves should she need to shake hands with non-mahram individuals, especially organisers or guests from overseas, singer Wany Hasrita admits that the measure is taken as an effort to maintain social boundaries without offending others.
Wany, whose real name is Nurshazwany Hasrita Hasbullah, 33, said every individual has their own stance, but for her, situations involving foreign cultures require wisdom so that both parties respect each other.
“Honestly, I feel conflicted about commenting on this matter. For me, everyone has their own choices and principles.
“To be truthful, I understand that there are situations that are quite difficult to avoid, especially when they extend their hand as a sign of respect,” she told Kosmo! Online.
As the official brand ambassador for a South Korean instant noodle brand, the singer of Menahan Rindu shared her experience of dealing with representatives from a Korean company who understood her stance of not shaking hands without a valid reason.
“For example, today (yesterday) I had to inform the Korean executives that I was in a state of wudhu (ablution). Alhamdulillah, they were very understanding after it was explained to them why.
“They really respected my explanation. For them, shaking hands is indeed a common custom, but we have our own way of maintaining boundaries,” she said at the exclusive preview of the drama Impian Di Seoul during MIFFest 2026, here, yesterday.
The mother of one said wearing gloves is among the best alternatives should she be unable to avoid such situations, aside from trying to minimise physical contact.
“If possible, we do avoid it. Earlier today (yesterday) as well, there were some who still wanted to shake hands, fortunately I was wearing gloves, so I could shake hands.
“If we can reduce it, we reduce it. That is my effort because shaking hands is a sign of respect. Like when we shake hands with mahram relatives, but they are indeed accustomed to handshakes. So the least we can do is wear gloves.
“Regardless, I want to emphasise that this is each individual’s choice. I am not judging or criticising anyone because everyone has their own beliefs and ways,” she explained.
Previously, Wany caught the attention of many when she was seen wearing gloves while attending an event involving parties from overseas, as a preparation should a situation arise requiring her to accept greetings from non-mahram men who may not fully understand the boundaries for Muslim women.
In other developments, Wany has teamed up with Khai Bahar in the TikTok micro-drama Impian Di Seoul, the second season produced by the Korean instant noodle brand NONGSHIM SHIN Ramyun.
The series continues the success of Salju Di Busan with a more dramatic storyline, deep emotional conflicts, and various cliffhanger scenes, and was launched in conjunction with the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) 2026.
