Two Men Face Up To RM1 Million Fine Over Sale And Purchase Of 1kg Cooking Oil Packets To Foreigners
BUTTERWORTH: For selling and buying a single packet of one‑kilogram (kg) cooking oil, two men were brought before the Sessions Court here today on related charges, and they face a maximum fine of up to RM1 million.
The local accused, Muhammad Anwar Kartibhan, 30, and Mohd Roshidul Malitha, 44, who is also a contract worker of Bangladeshi nationality, pleaded guilty when the charges were read out separately against them before Judge Roslan Hamid.
According to the charge, Muhammad Anwar was accused of selling a controlled item, namely cooking oil in one‑kilogram polybag packaging, to a foreigner.
This was found to be in violation of Regulation 2(1) of the Supply Control (Prohibition of Sale and Purchase of Controlled Goods) (Cooking Oil) Regulations 2026, which is punishable under Section 22(1) of the Supply Control Act 1961.
The offence was allegedly committed at a premises at Lingkaran Cassia Barat, Simpang Ampat, at about 5.40 p.m. on 19 July last.
If convicted, the accused could be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for up to three years, or both.
Meanwhile, Md Roshidul was charged with purchasing 1kg of the controlled item, which is not permitted to be sold to non‑Malaysian citizens.
The offence was allegedly committed at about 5 p.m. at the same place and on the same day.
The accused was charged under Regulation 3(2) of the Supply Control (Prohibition of Sale and Purchase of Controlled Goods) (Cooking Oil) Regulations 2026, which is punishable under Section 22(1) of the Supply Control Act 1961.
If convicted, he could be fined not more than RM1 million or imprisoned for up to two years, or both; while for a second or subsequent offence, he could be fined up to RM2 million or imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Alsad Nasrullah, while both accused were unrepresented by counsel.
During proceedings, Alsad offered bail of RM5,000 each for both accused, in addition to requesting that the accused report to the nearest KPDN office and apply for a date for a chemical report before sentencing.
Both accused appealed for minimum bail, informing the court that one of their wives is currently pregnant and will deliver soon.
The court then allowed both accused to be released on bail of RM3,000 each with one local surety, and required them to comply with the conditions set by the prosecution.
The case will be mentioned again on 21 August.
