No Need to Resign, PM Has Absolute Power to Appoint or Dismiss

CYBERJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has asserted that there is no requirement for any minister, deputy minister, or statutory body chairman to resign over allegations of attacking “fellow allies” within the Unity Government.

Ahmad Zahid stated that the authority to determine their positions rests entirely with the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that the appointment of such office holders is the Prime Minister’s absolute prerogative, and any decision regarding their positions can only be made by him based on the information at his disposal.

“The power of appointment is the Prime Minister’s absolute right. Therefore, if the Prime Minister suspects or receives credible information, it is his absolute authority to act, and no one needs to tender their resignation,” he said.

He made these remarks after officiating the 2026 Immigration Day celebration here today.

Ahmad Zahid was responding to a question regarding the Prime Minister’s suggestion that any minister, deputy minister, or statutory body chairman who had attacked fellow allies within the Unity Government during the state election (PRN) campaign should relinquish their posts.

Elaborating further, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, emphasised that the matter of appointing and dismissing office holders is the Prime Minister’s prerogative.

“It is the Prime Minister’s prerogative power,” he said.

Earlier, Anwar was reported to have reminded all government administration members and office holders in government agencies not to use their positions to attack parties or leaders who are allies within the Unity Government, particularly during the Negeri Sembilan PRN campaign.

According to the Prime Minister, any party that chooses to do so should be prepared to step down, as such actions contradict the spirit of cooperation agreed upon within the government.
