Trade Rises 4.7% to RM340.9 Billion in June 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s trade performance continued to strengthen in June 2026, supported by sustained growth in both exports and imports.

Total trade in June 2026 continued to strengthen, recording an increase of 44.7 percent from RM235.6 billion to RM340.9 billion, driven by stronger export growth (+45.4%) valued at RM177.9 billion as well as an increase in imports (+43.9%) to RM163.0 billion.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia stated that the trade surplus expanded by 64.9 percent to RM14.9 billion in June 2026.

Malaysia’s exports increased in June 2026, supported by growth in both re-exports and domestic exports.

Re-exports, which accounted for 22.1 percent of total exports, rose 48.7 percent year-on-year to RM39.3 billion.

Meanwhile, domestic exports, which contributed 77.9 percent of total exports, grew 44.6 percent to RM138.6 billion.

The trade surplus surged 64.9 percent to RM14.9 billion, marking the 74th consecutive month of trade surplus since May 2020.

The increase in exports was primarily supported by higher shipments to the United States (+RM18.1 billion), followed by Singapore (+RM8.1 billion), China (+RM5.4 billion), Taiwan (+RM3.1 billion), the European Union (+RM2.7 billion), Japan (+RM2.6 billion), and Thailand (+RM2.5 billion).

According to the department, export growth was driven by higher shipments of electrical and electronic goods (+RM30.9 billion), other manufactured products (+RM8.8 billion), petroleum products (+RM4.7 billion), liquefied natural gas (+RM2.9 billion), optical and scientific goods (+RM2.2 billion), and metal manufacturing (+RM2.1 billion).

The increase in imports largely reflected higher inflows from China (+RM15.8 billion), followed by Singapore (+RM10.0 billion), the Republic of Korea (+RM4.6 billion), the United States (+RM4.2 billion), Taiwan (+RM3.5 billion), India (+RM2.2 billion), and the European Union (+RM2.2 billion).

It was stated that imports reflected higher inflows of electrical and electronic goods (+RM32.0 billion), petroleum products (+RM5.6 billion), other manufactured products (+RM2.1 billion), machinery, equipment and parts (+RM1.8 billion), iron manufacturing (+RM1.7 billion), and transport equipment (+RM1.6 billion).

Compared to May 2026, imports and total trade increased by 13.2 percent and 4.0 percent respectively. Meanwhile, exports and the trade surplus recorded declines of 3.2 percent and 62.7 percent respectively.

Total trade, exports, and imports for the period from January to June 2026 recorded increases.

Meanwhile, total trade registered double-digit growth of 22.4 percent, from RM1.5 trillion to RM1.8 trillion, in line with increases in exports (+27.5%) and imports (+16.9%).

In addition, the trade surplus also expanded by 159.8 percent to RM147.1 billion.
