SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam Independence Square (Dataran Kemerdekaan) has been selected as the official venue for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the decision was finalised during a meeting, with all further details regarding the ceremony to be announced by the secretariat in the near future.

“The venue has been finalised and will remain modest, merely bringing together the contingents along with some light festivities. The closing ceremony will also be very modest, in line with the current situation and cost-saving measures.

“However, I believe the excitement can still be generated at the venues where the competitions are held. I hope the people of the state will give their support and witness the competition,” he said.

Previously, State Sports Executive Councillor Mohd Najwan Halimi had informed that the Shah Alam Independence Square was almost certain to be chosen as the venue for the Games’ opening ceremony.

According to him, several aspects, including safety and security, were being finalised with the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) before an official announcement was made.

SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from 15 to 24 August, while PARA SUKMA 2026 will be held from 5 to 14 September.

The Games will feature 469 events across 37 sports, while PARA SUKMA will involve 316 events across 10 sports.

The country’s largest sporting event will see participation from all state contingents, with Brunei Darussalam also taking part as an invited contingent, thus completing a total of 15 contingents.
