KUALA LUMPUR: The drafting of the Cybercrime Bill 2026 is important to ensure that domestic laws remain relevant and effective in combating cybercrime comprehensively, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the drafting of the Bill, among other things, strengthens and ensures that the cybercrime legal framework is established and resilient in dealing with increasingly complex cybercrime.

He said the Bill will also address gaps in the existing legal landscape in the country to guarantee legal harmony so that it remains relevant, responsive and in line with the rapid evolution of digital technology.

He said the drafting of the Bill, which emphasises the principle of technology neutrality, among other things, will repeal the Computer Crimes Act 1997 (Act 563) to ensure that the country fulfills its obligations under the Budapest Convention and the United Nations (UN).

“This Bill will also protect the public interest and ensure the safety of the people from cyber threats, and will be enforced by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and the National Security Council (MKN).

“Among other things, it strengthens innovation in prevention, detection and enforcement mechanisms regarding cybercrime threats,” he said during the second reading of the Bill in the Dewan Rakyat today.
