Massive Immigration Crackdown in Kuala Lumpur: 186 Illegal Migrants Detained in Joint Enforcement Operation

KUALA LUMPUR: The burden of repaying family debts amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit has driven some foreign nationals to enter Malaysia illegally in search of work, according to individuals detained during an integrated enforcement operation conducted by the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) Kuala Lumpur around Pudu Market late Tuesday night.

One of those detained, a foreign woman in her 30s who wished to be identified only as Lili, said she entered Malaysia without valid travel documents after her family accumulated significant debts due to rising living costs.

Lili, who claimed to be working at a traditional massage centre, said her family had resorted to borrowing money to support daily expenses, leaving them trapped in a cycle of debt.

“I know what I did was wrong, but I felt I had no other choice. My family is burdened with a large amount of debt, and I need to work to help them,” she said after being detained for failing to produce valid travel documents during the operation.

“Every month, I send money back home. If I stop working, my family will continue to struggle with debt,” she added.

Meanwhile, another foreign national, identified only as Rahman, admitted attempting to flee upon noticing the presence of immigration enforcement officers out of fear of being detained.

The man, who claimed to have been living in Malaysia for the past decade, said his passport had expired and he had been unable to renew it due to financial difficulties.

“I work as a vegetable seller and earn about RM1,500 a month. I share a rented house with several friends,” he said.

“I want to renew my passport, but I simply do not have enough money. When I saw the operation taking place, I panicked and tried to run,” he added.

The operation was divided into three sectors — Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 — to facilitate inspections of individuals present in and around the market area.

Most of those screened were believed to be employed as shop assistants, general workers and street vendors in the vicinity.

In a statement, JIM Kuala Lumpur reminded foreign nationals to comply with Malaysia’s immigration laws and ensure that their travel documents and work permits remain valid at all times.

The department stressed that strict action would continue to be taken against individuals who enter the country illegally, overstay their permitted period of stay, or misuse immigration facilities granted to them.

JIM also urged employers not to hire or shelter undocumented migrants, warning that such actions constitute offences under Malaysia’s immigration laws.
