Selangor Strengthens Public Transport Access with KTMB, Prasarana
SHAH ALAM: The State Government is collaborating with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to strengthen public transport connectivity for first‑mile and last‑mile travel, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Semenyih.
Investment, Trade and Mobility EXCO Ng Sze Han said that discussions are ongoing with KTMB to reinstate the Smart Selangor Bus service at the Bangi KTM Station after the upgrade works of the Klang Valley Double Track Phase 2 (KVDT2) project are completed next year.
“The State Government will continue to collaborate with major public transport providers such as Prasarana and KTMB so that Semenyih residents can enjoy a more comfortable and efficient public transport system,” he said during the question and answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DNS) today.
He said this when answering a question from the Semenyih State Assemblyman (ADN), Nushi Mahfodz, regarding efforts to improve public transport services in that area.
Sze Han said that although Semenyih has access to the MRT Kajang Line and the Bangi KTM Komuter Station, both stations are located approximately 10 to 12 kilometres from residential areas, thus making it difficult for residents to use the services.
To address that issue, the area is now equipped with several public transport services including Rapid Bus intermediate bus routes T450 and T460, Smart Selangor Bus route KJ02 which connects the Bangi KTM Station to Bandar Bukit Mahkota, as well as Rapid On‑Demand which covers Bandar Tasik Kesuma, Bandar Rinching, Bangi KTM Station and Sungai Jernih.
Sze Han said that Smart Selangor Bus routes are determined based on several criteria, among them covering medium and low‑cost housing areas, locations with high demand for public transport, as well as areas near hospitals, clinics, commercial centres, educational institutions and major transport hubs.
Answering a supplementary question regarding the proposal to expand bus routes to new housing areas and improve connectivity between the Kajang MRT Station and its surrounding areas during the KVDT2 work period, he said the State Government will examine the proposal.
“The State Government together with the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Prasarana and other public transport providers will discuss to assess the need to add public transport facilities in Semenyih, which is now developing rapidly,” he said.
In another development, Sze Han said that Selangor is also reviewing its state transport planning approach by shifting from conventional methods that are more focused on car usage.
He said that transport planning previously relied heavily on Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA), but now the State Government plans to use a multimodal accessibility approach.
Through that approach, travel time will be assessed using various modes of transport such as private cars, buses, rail, micromobility and walking to help produce more effective transport planning.
“I believe it is time for us to review the existing guidelines,” he said.
