US-Iran Talks Scheduled For Friday Cancelled, Says Swiss Foreign Ministry
ISTANBUL/GENEVA: The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced early Friday that the scheduled United States-Iran talks have been cancelled, according to Anadolu Agency (AA).
“The discussions in Bürgenstock will not take place as planned today,” the ministry announced in a statement.
“Consequently, the meeting announced yesterday has been cancelled,” according to the statement, which was issued shortly after the White House announced that US Vice President JD Vance would not depart for Switzerland on Thursday as logistical details for the expected technical talks with Iran had yet to be resolved.
On Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian electronically signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which aimed to pave the way for ending the war launched by Washington and Tel Aviv against Iran on February 28.
Under the terms of the agreement, Iran would immediately reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, while the US would lift its naval blockade, according to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who also signed the document as a mediator.
