Xi Calls on Myanmar Leadership to Pursue Development Path Supported by the People During Beijing Talks
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged Myanmar’s leadership to pursue a development path that aligns with the country’s conditions and gains public support as both nations move to strengthen political and economic cooperation.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Beijing on Tuesday, following an official welcome ceremony for the visiting leader.
According to China’s state-run media, Xi said Myanmar remains an important partner in China’s neighbourhood diplomacy and expressed Beijing’s support for efforts to balance development and security priorities.
“China supports Myanmar in finding a path of development suitable to its national situation and supported by the people,” Xi said during the talks.
The Chinese leader also highlighted the importance of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, a major project under the Belt and Road Initiative, saying both sides should continue advancing infrastructure cooperation while ensuring stability and security.
Xi said ongoing projects should contribute to Myanmar’s economic growth and improve the livelihoods of its people. He also reaffirmed China’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Min Aung Hlaing arrived in China on Monday for a five-day state visit at Xi’s invitation. The trip marks his first visit to China after becoming Myanmar’s president and follows several years of military rule after the 2021 takeover of the civilian government.
During the visit, Min is expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and senior Chinese officials, including top legislator Zhao Leji.
The talks come as Beijing and Naypyidaw seek to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure, energy, and regional connectivity.
China remains Myanmar’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching around US$19.4 billion last year. The two neighbouring countries share extensive economic links, particularly through cross-border commerce and major development projects.
Min’s China visit follows his recent trip to India, his first overseas visit since taking office, highlighting Myanmar’s efforts to strengthen ties with key regional powers.
