‘Share cases of misconduct on social media, I will make a surprise visit and investigate’

PETALING JAYA: There is no such thing as protecting the name or image of the institution when it comes to cases of misconduct, bullying or sexual crimes at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and Mara Educational Institutions (IPMA).

Chairman of the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, every report received through social media will be treated seriously and must be investigated and acted upon immediately.

“Do not worry about sharing any cases of misconduct, bullying, let alone sexual crimes related to MRSM or any IPMA on social media. There is no such thing as protecting the name or image. I take every report seriously and it must be investigated and acted upon immediately,” he said in a post on Facebook today.

According to him, when he was first appointed as Mara Chairman in 2023, he received many complaints regarding cases of bullying at MRSM and several IPMA through social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

He said this situation prompted him to conduct surprise visits or #Terjah (literally ‘make a surprise visit’) without prior notice to the management of the institutions involved.

“In the early stages, there was a tendency to cover up or hide bullying cases, and some even trivialised the act as if it were a normal part of hostel life. As someone who has lived in a hostel, this culture must be stopped and cannot be compromised,” he said.

He said Mara then took various firm measures including introducing the slogan #YouTouchYouGo to ensure immediate action was taken against perpetrators of bullying.

He added that every complaint from parents and students received through social media will be investigated by Mara’s management and appropriate action will be taken without delay.

“If there are those who hide such cases, firm action will also be taken against the administrators of the MRSM and IPMA involved,” he said.

He said after identifying the main causes of the spread of bullying culture in hostels, Mara also implemented a pilot project to place full-time wardens among former military personnel to strengthen monitoring and student discipline.
