KUANTAN: Pahang police are in the final stages of completing their investigation into allegations that a university student was slapped by a politician during a programme in Janda Baik, Bentong.
Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said authorities are currently recording statements from several witnesses to strengthen the investigation before submitting the case to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP).
According to Yahaya, the 23-year-old student lodged a police report at 12.11pm on May 30, claiming he was allegedly slapped by a 62-year-old politician during a university-related event held on May 20.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly slapped the victim in front of several individuals attending the programme,” Yahaya said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that the student filed the report because he was dissatisfied with the politician’s actions, although he did not suffer any serious injuries as a result of the incident.
Police have also received a report from the politician involved, which was lodged at approximately 7pm on June 1.
“So far, statements from both the complainant and the suspect have been recorded. We will continue taking statements from several witnesses to complete the investigation,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
Once the investigation papers are finalised, they will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office for further action.
The incident has attracted public attention after allegations surfaced involving the conduct of a prominent political figure during an educational programme attended by students.
