CEBU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s fuel and diesel supply situation has become more stable following a series of proactive measures introduced by the government and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).
Speaking to reporters after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Cebu on Friday, Anwar said the government had acted aggressively to strengthen national fuel security amid ongoing global uncertainties.
“We have reduced RON95 consumption, tightened enforcement against diesel leakages and smuggling activities, and increased fuel imports to strengthen supply security,” said Anwar, who also serves as finance minister.
He added that the nation’s fuel supply situation is now far less critical compared to two months ago, when concerns over shortages and supply disruptions were higher.
The Prime Minister was responding to questions regarding assurances that the country’s fuel reserves remain sufficient through June.
According to Anwar, fuel supply challenges linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis and their impact on the global economy were among the major issues discussed during the ASEAN Summit.
ASEAN member states, he said, also exchanged views on tackling rising prices and shortages involving food supplies, fertilisers, and transportation costs.
“Countries with surplus resources have agreed to prioritise ASEAN needs, while member states are also exploring ways to increase regional production capacity,” he explained.
On regional energy cooperation, Anwar said all ASEAN nations continue to support initiatives such as the ASEAN Power Grid, which is aimed at strengthening alternative energy supply and long-term regional energy resilience.
The 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings are being held on May 7 and 8 in Cebu, with Anwar leading Malaysia’s delegation. He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
