Hantavirus Risk Remains Low, Public Urged to Stay Vigilant: Ministry of Health

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Ministry of Health has assured the public that the current risk of hantavirus infection in the country remains low, while urging people to take preventive measures and avoid direct contact with rats or their waste.

In a statement released on Friday (May 8), the ministry advised the public not to touch rats, including their droppings and urine, due to the potential risk of infection. Authorities also warned against sweeping or vacuuming rat droppings directly, as contaminated particles could become airborne and increase the risk of exposure.

The ministry recommended the use of gloves and face masks when cleaning areas that may be contaminated by rodent waste. Individuals who develop symptoms such as fever, body aches, coughing, or breathing difficulties after exposure to potentially contaminated environments were urged to seek immediate medical attention.

According to the statement, Malaysia has strengthened its preparedness measures to address any potential infectious disease threat. National focal points under the International Health Regulations (IHR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been activated to continuously monitor global developments related to hantavirus.

The ministry added that cleanliness inspections and rodent infestation monitoring are being carried out at international ports as part of control measures under IHR 2005. Surveillance at all entry points nationwide has also been intensified.

Healthcare facilities and laboratories across the country have been placed on alert to ensure early detection, reporting, and case management should any suspected infections arise.

The statement came following reports of a hantavirus cluster detected aboard the international cruise liner MV Hondius, where eight suspected cases and three confirmed deaths were reported.

Malaysia’s Health Ministry said it will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
