Malaysia Supports US-Iran MoU, Condemns Israel’s Attempts to Sabotage Peace Negotiations
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia was among the first countries to express full support for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran to end the military conflict in West Asia, while playing an active role in efforts to ensure lasting peace in the region.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia will continue to leverage various international platforms including the United Nations (UN), the UN Security Council, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), BRICS, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) towards a comprehensive resolution of the West Asian conflict.
“Alhamdulillah, finally the US and Iran have agreed to sign the MoU, which provides for a 60-day period for both countries to negotiate the ratification of the agreed matters. A total of 14 points are contained in the MoU, including efforts to rebuild Iran’s destroyed infrastructure worth USD300 billion, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops including from Lebanon,” he said while responding to a question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He explained that Malaysia has taken an indirect approach, including contacting counterparts from Pakistan, which serves as the intermediary country in the US-Iran negotiations, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, to provide moral support.
“We are constantly monitoring the situation, and whatever needs moral support, we will continue to support. Malaysia is also one of the co-sponsors of UN Security Council Resolution 2817 concerning the Strait of Hormuz, to ensure that peace in the West Asian region is swiftly restored,” he said.
Regarding the importance of peace in West Asia, the Foreign Minister stressed that the conflict has had a direct impact on the global economy, including Malaysia, particularly due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a significant portion of the global crude oil supply.
He also condemned what he described as Israel’s attempts to sabotage the peace negotiations, by continuing military operations in Lebanon despite the issue of withdrawal having been addressed in the MoU.
“There are parties that do not want to see this war ended in West Asia, namely Israel. Israel, as much as possible, wants to see Iran destroyed. So there are interested parties that want to sabotage the peace negotiations between Iran and America,” he said.
He added that Malaysia will continue to use multilateral diplomatic channels to increase international pressure on Israel to stop the aggression in Lebanon, attacks on Gaza, and actions in the West Bank of Palestine.
