KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed immediate action on cloud seeding operations in drought-affected states while also underscoring the importance of animal welfare, transparency, and strong governance during a high-level meeting with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).

Following a session with the ministry’s top management, Anwar said urgent measures are needed to address critical weather conditions, particularly in Kedah and Perlis. He instructed the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to expedite cloud seeding efforts, including exploring the use of drone technology and collaborations with multiple stakeholders to overcome the shortage of suitable aircraft.
“The priority is to ensure the well-being of the people, especially in areas severely affected by prolonged dry conditions,” he said.
During the meeting, NRES officials also raised concerns about three Malaysian elephants, Dara, Amoi, and Kelat, currently in Japan. The Prime Minister acknowledged public concern and stressed that the welfare of the animals must remain a top priority for both NRES and Zoo Taiping.
He emphasized that any decisions regarding the elephants should be based on verified facts and guided by what is in the animals’ best interest. He also called for continuous, transparent communication to keep the public informed about their condition abroad.
Concluding the meeting, Anwar reiterated the government’s commitment to high-quality governance, strong integrity, and zero tolerance for leakages or misconduct.
“These principles are fundamental to our efforts in building an inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable Malaysia,” he added.
