A RM15 million container of syabu that was labeled as “drink stuff” was discovered at Sepanggar Port
KOTA KINABALU: Customs officers in Kuala Lumpur searched a steel box that was said to hold “drink stuff” and found drugs worth more than RM15 million inside.
The container came from Port Klang and was being screened and inspected at Sepanggar Port around 11:30 a.m. on April 22. At that moment, law enforcement officers noticed 15 boxes inside the container that appeared suspicious.
Dr. Ahmad Taufil Sulaiman, head of the Sabah Customs Department, said that substances weighing about 305.722 kg that were thought to be methamphetamine were found during inspections by officers from the Narcotics Division and the Import Export Division.
He said that the drugs were taken away and that the case is being looked into under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If found guilty, this crime carries the death sentence or life in prison. He said this at a press meeting here on Monday (May 4). “Drug cartels are getting smarter and are using all kinds of tricks to avoid being caught.”
He also said that the department would keep up with the law and tighten border control, especially at ports and other busy areas, to stop people from moving things across.
Ahmad asked people to help fight crime and to call the toll-free Customs line at 1-800-88-8855 or the Customs office closest to them if they see any suspicious smuggling activities.
He assured us that the department would maintain confidentiality for those providing information.
