Starmer Faces Growing Political Pressure Over Mandelson Ambassador Appointment

LONDON, Feb 8: Pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid growing fallout over his controversial decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, with senior ministers and Labour Party figures questioning his judgment and leadership.

The controversy has intensified after new details emerged last week about Mandelson’s past relationship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, raising renewed scrutiny over Starmer’s decision and reopening political wounds for the Labour government.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden acknowledged on Sunday that Starmer’s leadership could be affected by the ongoing controversy, though he urged party unity and warned against frequent leadership changes.

“I appreciate this has been a week of terrible headlines,” McFadden said, adding that political instability was not in the country’s interest.

Reports from British media outlets said Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy had previously warned Starmer against appointing Mandelson, while Angela Rayner, a former deputy prime minister, was also said to have voiced concerns privately.

Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his role in September following revelations about his connections to Epstein. Mandelson is now reportedly under police investigation for alleged misconduct in office.

The appointment has become one of the most significant political challenges Starmer has faced in his 18 months as leader, with some lawmakers openly questioning his judgment and future leadership.
