KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12: Former Health Minister Datuk Seri Khairy Jamaluddin, widely known as KJ, responded warmly after former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming publicly expressed confidence in Khairy’s potential as Malaysia’s future prime minister.
In a social media post, Khairy described Ong’s tribute as “leaving me a little speechless” and highlighted the rarity of genuine friendships that transcend political divides.
The former UMNO Youth chief, who is currently active in national politics, recalled that his bond with Ong predates their political careers. “I was at your wedding. You were at my birthdays. That’s more than just expedient political networking; that’s friendship,” Khairy said.
He added, “Friendships endure through fair winds and stormy seas. We share a vision for the nation. Let’s get it done, brother.”
Ong, who previously served as a DAP MP and deputy federal minister, has since returned to academia. In his tribute, Ong declared his willingness to take leave from work to campaign publicly for Khairy in the next general election, emphasizing that his support transcends party lines.
The exchange has drawn attention in political circles as a rare example of civility and mutual respect between former politicians from opposing parties, highlighting a shared commitment to national progress over partisan differences.
