JOHOR BAHRU: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has confirmed that it will contest nine seats in the Melaka state election next month.

Its Secretary-General, Fuziah Salleh, said that if PKR was contesting nine seats, Pakatan Harapan (PH) would certainly be fielding candidates in more constituencies.

“Our candidates have more or less been finalised, God willing.

“The most important thing for us in Melaka is to ensure that preparations are in place, and we will put up a very strong fight, God willing,” she said after the opening ceremony of the Southern Zone International Franchise Exhibition Roadshow in Johor Bahru yesterday.

Meanwhile, commenting on possible cooperation between PKR and other political parties, Fuziah said no formal discussions had taken place so far, although PKR remained open to receiving support to ensure PH could mount a strong challenge.

She said any potential cooperation with other parties involved political strategy and should not be disclosed at this stage.

According to her, although no formal understanding had been reached, PKR welcomed any party willing to assist the coalition in the upcoming election.

“There have been no formal discussions, but if any party wishes to help, we would certainly welcome it. However, there is no formal understanding.

“As for whether we will cooperate with other parties, that involves strategy, so we will keep our strategy to ourselves for now,” she told a press conference after officiating the Southern Zone Malaysia International Franchise Exhibition 2027 Roadshow (Road to FIM2027) here yesterday.

Fuziah, who is also Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, said PKR was expected to contest nine State Legislative Assembly seats in the Melaka election.

She said the party’s candidate list was nearly finalised and would be announced by PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on October 24, together with candidates from the coalition’s component parties.

The announcement will coincide with the launch of PH’s election machinery.

The Election Commission has set October 31 as nomination day, while polling will take place on November 14.
